Labyrinth.

Labyrinth was Elder Son’s favorite movie when he was about two (we had the video). ES would stand in the front of the TV and attempt to mimic Bowie’s moves during the Dance, Magic Dance scene (above). He would put on my tall black winter boots — which came up nearly to his crotch — and *dance* just like Bowie, including the arm movements and barking out, “Quiet!” at (almost) the right instant.

Although I was never a huge Bowie fan, he was so, so interesting and produced such memorable songs. Plus, he gave Smokey and me one of our favorite memories of Elder Son.

Thanks to you, David Bowie, and ES for a wonderful reminder of some wonderful memories. Labyrinth was my ES’s favorite movie for a while, so we had plenty of dancing in my house, too. My ES is going to be so jealous when I tell him that your ES had tall boots and had perfected the dance moves; this makes me want to rewatch Labyrinth and dance myself!

Labyrinth was what first interested me in Bowie.

What a wonderful story! Your post reminds me that it’s been a very, very long time since I watched Labyrinth . . . and it may even be possible that I deprived my poor children of the experience.

Labyrinth was a big hit at our house, too, and remains my best memory of Bowie’s magic. I need to go watch it again.
