Ten on Tuesday, the new mom edition.

Being a new mom is joyous and terrifying and exhausting, not necessarily in that order. Given that our society has become so mobile and urban in the last 50+ years, it is unlikely that any new mom has the built-in support network of extended family that previous generations enjoyed. Hence, this ToT.

Ten Ways To Help A New Mom.

  1. Bring over a complete dinner one night. (Let her pick the night.)
  2. Bring over a couple casseroles (in disposable pans) that she can throw in the freezer and have ready for that night she absolutely positively cannot cook.
  3. Give her a coupon good for a service — an afternoon or evening of baby sitting, x hours of errands, whatever you can think of.
  4. Share the contact info for your favorite baby sitter(s).
  5. Share your own memories of early motherhood, particularly the horror stories.
  6. Give her the URL of any mom blogs that you think she may enjoy.
  7. Knit for the baby.
  8. Knit for her.
  9. Make a sign she can put on her front door: Baby and Mom are sleeping. Please do not disturb.
  10. (for a not-so-new mom, one with other kids) Give her a coupon good for you taking the other kids out of the house for an afternoon — zoo, park, McDonalds, whatever — so she can enjoy the baby (and get in an uninterrupted nap while the babe sleeps).

I love the extra casserole idea, and the door sign! Great ideas!

I love the idea of giving her a list of blogs she might like.

Great list! So many good ideas.

You’ve put together a great list; I especially like #10. Being a mom is joyous, terrifying, and exhausting, and even more so if you’ve already got a two-year-old.

Excellent suggestions! Though on #5, I’d only share the horror stories if they can be told in a humorous way…

Great ideas. I might add: Sleep whenever you have 5 minutes or more. You are the mom now, you get to decide if you want cloth or pampers, breast or bottle, etc etc etc
